HAD 505 Health Care Stats/Research Methods

Discover the value of research and statistics in health care administration.

8 weeks

In any organization, major decisions should be based on data. There are many ways to analyze and use data and in HAD 505 Health Care Stats/Research Methods, you’ll become familiar with these methods. To help you in the collection of relevant data, you’ll examine qualitative and quantitative research methods appropriate to the study of health administration, including observational, quasi-experimental and experimental research designs.

Course Overview

As you examine and practice using statistics to describe health care data, you’ll see how probabilities are related to statistics, as well as discover the difference between qualitative and quantitative research studies. You’ll learn to calculate and interpret confidence intervals, which remind us that averages or proportions are only estimates. You’ll also learn how these intervals are used to test hypotheses. From t-tests to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and from chi-square tests to linear regression, you’ll explore research methods, tools and be able to carefully examine situations to determine which tool is appropriate based on the parameters presented.

Research doesn’t always yield exact answers or solutions. You’ll consider statistical tests that can be used to analyze numeric data when the data are not normally distributed or in those instances where data does not meet the usual assumptions required for common statistical tests. With a better understanding of health care statistics, you’ll be able to see how they are employed in health administration.

Sample Assignment

Working with a small group of students, you will develop a protocol for a quantitative research study that answers a specific research question. This assignment will include a written report and PowerPoint presentation.

Course Topics

Throughout each week of the course, you will focus on a core topic or theme. Sample topics are listed below and are subject to change based on the instructor.

  • Introduction and Basics of Study Design and Data
  • Qualitative Studies, Probability and Displaying Data
  • Confidence Intervals and Hypothesis Testing
  • T-tests
  • ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)
  • Correlation and Regression
  • Chi-square Tests and Logistic Regression
