Course Overview

Upon completing your Master of Health Administration coursework, you will have an opportunity to put your newfound skills and knowledge to use in a supervised field work experience. To ensure the value of your administrative internship, University of Scranton faculty and experienced health care executives pool their expertise to better prepare you for future leadership positions in the health care industry.

With the guidance of a preceptor and the field work faculty advisor, you’ll apply theories, concepts, principles and skills learned during the coursework phase of your education in a real-world setting. In addition to filing weekly reports during your internship, you’ll write a final paper about your field work experience.

This internship will give you an opportunity to prove yourself to potential employers, an opportunity not usually offered by the traditional employment search process. You’ll be able to establish and develop networking relationships for future career growth and development.

Real-life, hands-on experience

You’ll spend 150 clock hours working in the field, gaining supervised practical experience in a community agency or health services organization.

Your Internship Experience

During your internship, you’ll undertake a wide range of tasks, responsibilities and experiences.

  • Participate in team meetings, departmental meetings and select committee meetings.
  • Rotate through various departments in the health care setting.
  • Augment classroom learning through practical training experience gained at the worksite.
  • Understand and experience organizational structure and protocol.
  • Communicate effectively in a professional relationship.
  • Integrate and demonstrate concepts, principles, theory and applied knowledge acquired in all MHA curriculum courses.
  • Analyze data, evaluate reports and synthesize information in management meetings and applied projects.
  • Use and demonstrate proficiencies involving computer applications.
  • Discover new services and systems being implemented.
  • Inspect, interpret and organize reports in completing projects.
  • Attend appropriate meetings, conferences and training sessions.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, applying ethical principles where necessary.
  • Assimilate new information in an applied setting while undertaking new projects and activities.
  • Manage assigned work duties and responsibilities.
  • Prepare and formulate appropriate reports and memos.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
