University of Scranton Launches Online Certificate in Health Informatics

New four-course program offers a fast track to a growing field

Scranton, Penn. (May 30, 2016) – To meet a growing demand for professionals with the skills to apply information technology solutions to the healthcare industry, The University of Scranton is adding a Certificate in Health Informatics to its online offerings. This graduate-level program offers an accelerated path to a career in rapidly growing field of healthcare information.

Healthcare organizations are under growing pressure to cut costs and be more efficient while maintaining or improving patient outcomes. At the same time, they are working to transition to a fully electronic medical records system. Both trends are driving a demand for administrative professionals who are trained in assessing and implementing information technology — including medical systems, software and databases — for healthcare organizations.

“The Certificate in Health Informatics provides students with an additional avenue for gaining the skills to take advantage of this rapidly expanding field,” said Margarete Zalon, Ph.D., RN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, program director of The University of Scranton’s online Master of Science in Health Informatics program. “The courses are culled from our respected master’s program, are taught by the same faculty and meet the same high standards.”

The Certificate in Health Informatics consists of the first four courses in the full master’s program:

  • HINF 520 - Introduction to Health Informatics
  • HINF 530 - Healthcare Knowledge for Health Informatics
  • HINF 535 - Principles of Computer Science and Software Development
  • HINF 540 - Information Technology for Health Informatics

These 3-credit courses provide foundational knowledge in information technology for record-keeping, communication and workflow processes in healthcare. Applicants without a background in health care or IT may be required to complete one or both of two foundational modules in those areas.

Students may complete the certificate program in less than a year, and have the option of continuing their studies by applying their credit from the certificate to the full online Master’s in Health Informatics program.
