Brian Carpenter

Professor of Accounting, The University of Scranton
The University of Scranton, Alumni 1982 (M.B.A.)

Dr. Carpenter graduated from the University of Scranton with an M.B.A. in Accounting and Finance in 1982. He received his doctorate in accounting from the Pennsylvania State University in 1987. Prior to his return to the University of Scranton, Professor Carpenter taught at Penn State’s Main Campus and at Lehigh University. Dr. Carpenter has published his research in many leading journals, including Accounting, Organizations, and Society; Internal Auditor; Strategic Finance; and Management Accounting Quarterly. He has been the recipient of several teaching and research awards including the Alpha Sigma Nu teacher of the year award, the CASE professor of the year award, the PICPA professor of the year award, the University of Scranton’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning award and the Institute of Management Accounting’s Certificate of Merit award.

Jeff Bharkhda


Director, Financial Due Diligence; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP / San Francisco

Jeff is a Director in the San Francisco Transaction Services practice where he focuses on serving PwC’s Private Equity clients. His Transaction Services deal experience crosses a number of sectors, having advised financial and strategic buyers on over 100 deals. Jeff has participated in nearly all aspects and types of transactions, including large strategic divestitures, joint ventures, purchase price disputes and bankruptcy buyouts.


Jeff completed a two year tour in PwC's London office where he led diligence efforts on some of the most significant European transactions during those years. Prior to his tour in London, Jeff was based in Philadelphia where his corporate client base included a public medical device and component manufacturer and a global conglomerate with a healthcare products/services division for whom he was involved in a number of diligence projects.


Jeff completed a five month rotation at Genesis Park, PwC’s innovation and leadership development program, sponsored by PwC’s Global Leadership Team. During his involvement, Jeff worked with a global team of individuals from five continents on projects addressing strategic business initiatives, new product development and implications of a changing regulatory environment Jeff is a two-time recipient of the PwC Chairman's Award, recognizing excellence in client service delivery and dedication to PwC and its people.


Jeff graduated from the University of Scranton where he majored in Finance and Accounting. Jeff is a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of the AICPA, Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and CalCPA.

William J. Lewis

Mr. Lewis is a partner in the Assurance practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) U.S. Banking and Capital Markets sector. He currently serves as lead engagement partner for the PNC Financial Services audit engagement. He immediately prior served as the lead engagement partner for the Freddie Mac audit engagement. From 2004 through 2006, Mr. Lewis served as the US Banking and Capital Markets Sector Leader and as the Managing Partner of PwC's Regulatory Advisory Services (RAS) Group from 2003 to 2006. He also led PwC’s efforts in the Financial Services Industry surrounding the firm’s and its clients’ implementation of Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404.


Mr. Lewis’ professional accounting career of 31 years has been dedicated to matters involving the financial services industry. He has served as audit engagement partner and regulatory advisory partner to numerous financial services clients in domestic commercial and consumer banking, investment banking, foreign banking, multilateral banking, government-sponsored enterprise and investment management.


His audit clients as a partner have included: PNC, Freddie Mac, Susquehanna Bancshares, Federal Home Loan Bank System, Barclays NY Branch, NationsBank (Virginia, Maryland and DC), and International Monetary Fund, World Bank. Prior to becoming a partner, he also served eight years on the audit of the Chase Manhattan Corporation.

His Regulatory Advisory Services clients as a partner have included: CIBC, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, Barclays Securities, HSBC, Bank of America, Capital One Financial, BankBoston Corporation, MBNA, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Trust, Credit Agricole Indosuez, Vanguard Trust, National Bank of Canada, Asahi Bank, Riggs Bank.


From 1990 to 1992 he served as a Professional Accounting Fellow with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) where he participated in the study of significant accounting and disclosure issues and concepts affecting banks and served as a technical accounting resource to examiners in the field and the Washington Headquarters management.


As Managing Partner of PwC's RAS practice, Mr. Lewis led a group of approximately 60 professionals with regulatory-based experience in examination, supervision policy, legal/regulatory development and enforcement, economics and auditing/accounting. He and the RAS team have provided technical support to the firm’s Financial Services Practice members and clients on matters including regulatory safety and soundness, compliance, internal audit effectiveness, structured transaction risk management, accounting, reporting, capital adequacy, implementing FDICIA section 112 and licensing/organizational structuring. He led the firm’s initiatives surrounding the implementation of FDICIA section 112 during the early 1990s.


Mr. Lewis has served as PwC's representative on the AICPA’s Depository Institutions Expert Panel, Chairman of the AICPA's Depository Institutions Guide Combination Task Force and as the Big Four firms’ liaison to the Financial Institutions Accounting Committee, which roles included regular interaction with accounting and policy-making officials of FDIC, OCC, FRB and SEC. He is a graduate of The University of Scranton with a B.S. in Accounting. He resides with his family in Great Falls, Virginia.

Brian Regan

Brian T. Regan is the director of tax services for the firm Regan, Levin, Bloss, Brown & Savchak, P.C. Brian began his accounting career in the banking profession with MidLantic National Bank. In 1983, Brian joined the firm of KPMG Peat Marwick where he led the tax department of the Lehigh Valley office. After serving twelve (12) years in the tax department at KPMG, he purchased the middle market practice of KPMG’s Lehigh Valley practice. Brian is now a senior director at RLB Accountants.


A 1982 graduate of the University of Scranton with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, Brian currently resides in Saucon Valley, PA with his wife and three children.

Douglas M. Boyle

Dr. Douglas M. Boyle, DBA, CPA, CMA, has over 25 years of professional experience in the areas of leadership, business turnarounds, corporate governance, finance, and operations. He has served in executive roles in start-up, middle market, and Fortune 500 companies where he has held the titles of Chief Executive Officer, President, Chief Operations Officer, and Chief Financial Officer. He has also work for KPMG Peat Marwick as a senior auditor. Doug has served on the Board of Directors for both public and private companies. He currently serves on the Board of Allied Services Integrated Healthcare System and Susan G. Komen of NE PA. In addition to his role as Director at Allied, he serves on the Finance Committee, as Chairman of the Board for the Skilled Nursing Division, and as the Vice-Chairman for the Foundation Board. He was admitted into the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) in 2004 and is a member of the Woodstock Business Conference, the Institute of Management Accountants, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Doug holds a Doctorate Program in Business Administration from Kennesaw State University, an MBA from Columbia University, and a BS in Accounting from the University of Scranton. He is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant and Six Sigma Black Belt trained in operations.


Doug serves on the faculty at the University of Scranton where he also serves as the Director of the Accounting Department and as the Faculty Senate President Elect. Doug was awarded the Kania School of Management Teacher of The Year for 2009 – 2010 and 2011 – 2012. He also received the Provost Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award for 2014 and Provost Excellence in Research Award for 2012. He was awarded the Kennesaw State University Accounting Department Excellence in Research Award in 2010. In addition, he has been awarded grants from PwC, The Institute of Management Accountants, and The Institute of Internal Auditors. He received national recognition for being awarded the Michael J. Barrett Doctoral Dissertation Award from The Institute of Internal Auditors and a Certificate of Merit from the Institute of Management Accountants. Over the past three years, he has had over twenty five publications in such outlets as Strategic Finance, Management Accounting Quarterly, The CPA Journal, Internal Auditing, Current Issues in Auditing, the PICPA Journal, The Journal of Applied Business Research, and The Journal of Business and Behavioral Sciences.

Denise M. Fleming

Denise M. Fleming is a Director in the New York Metro Personal Financial Services Group (PFS) with over twenty-five years of experience in the field. Denise specializes in income tax compliance and consulting. She advises clients on a variety of issues related to their personal tax and financial planning needs. Denise also offers services related to retirement planning and estate, gift and trust taxation.


Denise provides these services to a variety of high net worth individuals and their families, partners at major law firms, corporate executives, owners of private businesses, and to alternative investment fund managers.


Denise has a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Scranton. She is a member of both the New Jersey and New York Institutes of CPA’s and the American Institute of CPA’s.


Denise resides in Old Tappan, NJ with her husband Brian and their three children. She is an active member of her local community serving as liaison between the Board of Education and PTA, member of town recreation committee, Chairman of Annual Old Tappan Town Day Event, Eucharistic Minister/CCD teacher at St. Piux X Church and actively participates yearly in Relay for Life.

Dan graduated from The University of Scranton in 1981. He worked in industry before enrolling in graduate school. He earned his Ph.D. in accounting from Syracuse University (1990). He and his wife, the former Elizabeth Corey, have a daughter, Lauren.

Edward J. Steinmetz Jr., CPA

Edward J. Steinmetz, Jr., C.P.A., Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, was named to his current position in 2008.  He joined the University in 1991 to develop the internal audit function and served as the University of Scranton’s first internal auditor.  Mr. Steinmetz was promoted to assistant vice president for finance in 1993, and was named associate vice president for finance in 2002.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1981 and a master of business administration degree from The University of Scranton, and became a certified public accountant in 1982.


Prior to joining the university, he worked for 10 years in public and private accounting positions.  Mr. Steinmetz was co-chair of the steering committee for the University of Scranton’s last Self-Study Report for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.  He also serves on various other committees, including the President’s Cabinet, Financial Management Committee, Strategic Enrollment Committee and the Committee on University Image and Promotion.  He is also a resource member for a number of the Board of Trustee committees. He is an Adjunct Faculty Member in the Kania School of Management and has delivered presentations at various technology and professional business and finance association meetings. In addition, Ed has been a member of Pennsylvania Department of Education teams that evaluate proposed status changes for other educational institutions in the Commonwealth. He is also an active member of the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers.

Daniel Farrell

Daniel Farrell, Partner in PwC’s Health Services Deals Practice, is responsible for managing a wide range of merger, acquisition, and divestiture services for healthcare organizations. Dan’s clients include many of the world’s largest private equity firms and prestigious healthcare organizations. Leveraging his strategic and operational background in healthcare, Dan delivers not only financial expertise but is also fluent in translating the nuances of the healthcare regulatory and reimbursement environments into financial terms regardless of the sector.


Dan also leads PwC’s public private partnership (P3) practice for healthcare in the US and has advised both public and private sector organizations on implementing new models of care across a variety of care platforms (primary, acute, and tertiary).


Dan is a Certified Public Accountant and received his Master’s in Business Administration from Pennsylvania State University and his Bachelors of Science in Accounting from the University of Scranton.

James F. Boyle

After serving as a Faculty Specialist and as an Adjunct Accounting Professor from 2009 to 2013, James F. Boyle became an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the University of Scranton in 2014. He was also the University of Scranton’s Internal Auditor for over 12 years (1999 to 2012). Prior to joining The University of Scranton, he worked in public accounting as a CPA primarily in the audit department for 14 years.


He earned a B.S. in Accounting (1986) and an MBA in Finance (2004) from The University of Scranton. In 2014 he successfully defended his dissertation proposal and reached ABD (all but dissertation) status in a DBA program at Kennesaw State University with an expected graduation date of May 2015.


James F. Boyle has co-authored articles in The CPA Journal, The Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting, Internal Auditing, and the Pennsylvania CPA Journal. He also received a research grant from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Research Foundation to conduct my dissertation experimental study: The Effects of Risk Management Programs on Financial Managers’ Judgments.

Joseph A. Aldcowski, CPA

Joseph A. Aldcowski, CPA is an audit partner in the Firm’s Manufacturing, Distribution and Technology Practice in the Northern Pennsylvania Region. In addition to clients within the manufacturing, distribution and technology sectors, he also serve clients within the construction, real estate, natural stone and natural gas industries in Pennsylvania and New York, providing auditing, accounting and business consulting services.


Joseph A. Aldcowski, CPA is a licensed certified public accountant in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New York. He is actively involved in industry trade groups within the natural stone and natural gas industries. He also serves on several PICPA committees dealing with the natural gas industry in Pennsylvania.

John A. Ruddy, CPA, CFA

John A. Ruddy is a Faculty Specialist in the Accounting Department, The Arthur J. Kania School of Management, University of Scranton, Scranton, Pennsylvania. Mr. Ruddy has a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Scranton, Scranton, PA (1991) where he graduated cum laude. He also has M.B.A. in Finance and Investments from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (1996), and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Business Administration, with a focus in Finance at Pace University, New York City. As is noted above, he also has passed the Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst examinations and has the requisite experience for both designations.


Since 2004, Mr. Ruddy has taught at the University of Scranton as an adjunct professor, a guest lecturer and now as a full time faculty specialist. He has lectured undergraduate and graduate level classes in accounting and finance. He has also worked as an Accounting and Finance practitioner since 1991. He started his career as an auditor for the federal government, worked for a Big 4 accounting firm and several money center financial institutions. Most recently, he has worked with the Black Swan Consulting Group. He also served as the Finance Committee Chairman for the Scranton Preparatory School’s board of trustees and he regularly volunteers for charitable organizations, such as the American Red Cross.

Kenneth Bounds

His extensive experience in program management, process improvement, and change management has enabled the successful delivery of many multifaceted projects for large financial services companies.


Prior to Ernst & Young, Kenneth has held a position at the American Stock Exchange as a proprietary trader engaged in model development and arbitrage trading.

Paul W. Lameo

Paul Lameo is a New York based partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Banking & Capital Markets Group with over 19-years’ experience providing assurance and related services to a variety of clients. Paul has managed large and mid-size multinational clients and has supported client activities in numerous areas including SEC reporting, initial public offerings, acquisition due diligence, accounting and regulatory advisory, management assistance, litigation support, Sarbanes Oxley Section 404 and internal control assessments.


Paul’s capital market audit clients have included AllianceBernstein, Barclays Capital, FXAlliance, NYSE Euronext, Instinet Group, Salomon Smith Barney, TradeWeb, ICAP, Citadel Group and Citicorp Venture Capital. Paul has assisted a national broker-dealer with their assessment of a trading system conversion and a regional broker-dealer with transitional management.


Paul’s focus on broker-dealers includes financial reporting, regulatory calculations and institutional and retail securities activities. Paul’s other experiences include security market structure activities, private equity investments and incentive fees.


Paul is the current chairman of the AICPA's Stock Brokerage Expert panel and represents PwC on the planning committee for AICPA/SIFMA’s annual Conference on the Securities Industry. Paul is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of New York. He graduated from The University of Scranton and is active in recruiting there for the firm in the New York Metro Assurance Recruiting Program and serves on the President’s Business Council and is a former member of the Alumni Board of Governors. Paul also active in the Firm’s professional learning and education function as an instructor and has taught at the New York Institute of Finance.

Lawrence R. Lynch

Lawrence R. Lynch, better known as Larry, is an audit partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers, serving in their Financial Services sector. Over his career Larry has practiced in the firm's New York, Philadelphia and Paris offices.  He currently resides in Princeton, NJ and is married to Keli and is the father of five children. Larry currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of Scranton and formerly served on the University's Alumni Board. Larry is also a board member of the International Insurance Foundation. He previously served on the board of the Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Marymount International School in Paris and as a board member of the French American Chamber of Commerce, Philadelphia Chapter and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Catholic Social Services.

Linda McGowan

Linda has over thirty years of experience as a member of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Banking and Capital Markets Group. She is the national regulatory consulting partner providing technical advice on regulatory and industry-specific accounting matters, author of the Firm’s technical guidance, and the Firm’s letters on proposed rule changes. Linda has served industry clients including: Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch,Barclays, W.P. Stewart, Angelo Gordon, MarketAxess, Knight Trading Group, Commerzbank, Cantor Fitzgerald, Janney Montgomery Scott, and ICAP.


She has helped develop capital savings systems and interacted with the regulators for her clients on a no-name basis. Her client work involves diverse products such as commodity funds, venture capital investments and collateralized mortgage obligations and such diverse projects as: development of principal and interest collection and reconciliation procedures; special reviews of procedures with regard to possession or control, net capital, the reserve formula and the treasury auction and primary dealer reporting process; development of an integrated haircut system; review of branch office practices and procedures, operational reviews for both large and mid-size broker-dealers; implementation and evaluation of new clearing systems and evaluation of cross border margin and credit alternatives. She has been involved in numerous control reviews utilizing the COSO framework including such areas as: equity and fixed income trading; treasury, stock lending and repurchase transactions; and investment banking. She has assisted in the establishment and registration process for several broker-dealers in the Internet environment with foreign ownership and domestic based.

Stephanie M. Mihal, CPA

Stephanie has been with McGrail Merkel Quinn and Associates since January 2005. She completed 18 months as an intern through the University of Scranton Internship program and after graduation in May 2006, stayed on as a full time employee. She obtained her CPA and was promoted over the years to her current position as an Audit Manager. At MMQ, her audit focus consists of non-profit organizations, governmental entities, and employee benefit plans.


Stephanie is a volunteer with the University of Scranton Mentor Program through the Kania School of Management. She is also the Secretary of the Board of Directors of EOTC (Employment Opportunity and Training Center), a local non-profit organization located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. EOTC promotes family stability and economic self-sufficiency in low-income families across Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties.


Stephanie lives in Dalton Pennsylvania with her husband Nathan. She enjoys spending time with family, baking, and sports. Stephanie and her husband compete in various athletic events ranging from 5Ks to full distance Ironman triathlons.

Patrick J. Haveron



President; Maiden Resinsurance Company Ltd.

Mr. Haveron has served as Executive Vice President of Maiden Holdings since 2010 in a variety of senior leadership roles focused on strategy and finance. In February 2014 he was named President of Maiden Reinsurance Company Ltd., the Company’s Bermuda reinsurance company and largest operating subsidiary. He had previously served as President of Maiden Global Servicing Company, LLC since October 2009.


From 2004-2009, Mr. Haveron was President and Chief Executive Officer of Preserver Group, Inc., a publicly-traded property and casualty insurer, after having served in a variety of financial and executive leadership roles since 1988. Mr. Haveron was also Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Tower Group, Inc., a publicly-traded property and casualty insurer, from 2007-2009 after its acquisition of Preserver in 2007. He began his career in public accounting at the firm of Coopers & Lybrand from 1983 to 1988.


Mr. Haveron has previously served on the Board of Governors of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, an insurance industry trade association and is a member of the AICPA and NJSCPA. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the President’s Business Council of The University of Scranton.

Rob Grasso

Rob is an audit partner based in Philadelphia, PA, serving our Technology, Media and Telecommunications practice. He has more than fifteen years of professional experience in providing auditing, accounting and advisory services to public and private companies. Rob has deep experience in in the cable, media and technology industries, assisting clients with securities offerings, acquisitions and divestitures, including due diligence reviews, and accounting and reporting for complex transactions, including revenue, cost recognition and income taxes. He has also provided insights to attest clients in the areas of internal controls and regulatory compliance. Rob has conducted industry accounting seminars and presentations for the Firm’s national and local training conferences, and for external organizations, including the National Cable Television Association.

Robyn Lawrence, Ph.D., C.M.A.

Dr. Robyn Lawrence has been teaching accounting courses since 1976 at various AACSB accredited universities in the United States. Originally from the west coast, Dr. Lawrence earned a Bachelor of Science in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, a Master of Science in Accounting from the California State University, Sacramento, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration with an accounting specialization and a minor in statistics from the University of Houston. She was inducted into the Beta Alpha Psi (Lehigh University Chapter) and the Beta Gamma Sigma (University of Houston Chapter) Honor Societies. While earning her degrees, she shared ownership and management responsibilities for a dog grooming business and a dog grooming school, and interned with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Lawrence joined the faculty of the University of Scranton in 1993. In 2001 she became a tenured Associate Professor, and from 2005 to 2011 served as the Chairperson of the Accounting Department. Dr. Lawrence has taught accounting courses at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels including principles, financial, managerial, intermediate, cost, advanced financial and international, as well as freshman seminars. She also developed on-line modules in Financial and Managerial Accounting.

Dr. Lawrence has published numerous journal articles and made presentations at regional and national meetings on topics which include the utilization of accounting information in investment decisions, voluntary disclosures by Irish companies, reverse mergers, and various aspects of accounting education and professional certifications. She has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Business and Behavioral Sciences and the Journal of Business and Accounting, and as an Accounting Track Chair for the annual meetings of American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences. She is a member of the American Accounting Association and has served as session chairperson and manuscript reviewer for its regional and annual meetings. Dr. Lawrence has been a member of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants since 1991, a member of the Chapter's Board from 1998 to 2010, and served as Chapter President in 2002-2003. Dr. Lawrence is a Certified Management Accountant.

Tom Valvano

Tom is a Certified Public Accountant with over 20 years of public accounting (11 with a Big Four audit firm) and business advisory experience. He currently serves as the lead engagement partner on several international public and privately held companies, which are some of the Philadelphia office’s largest clients. His experiences with international companies have enabled him to establish deep relationships within the Grant Thornton International network of member firms as well as effectively and efficiently coordinate and deliver services to large international organizations. He has also participated in the Firm’s International Partner Development Program and Partner Leadership Program.

Tom has extensive experience across many industries, including but not limited to, the oil and gas, pharmaceutical and life science, manufacturing, newspaper publishing, services, Contract Research Organizations (CRO), chemical, refining and marketing, software, talent management and construction industries to name a few. He has served both public and non-public companies with revenues up to $20 billion and participated and lead peer and internal quality control review teams.

Timothy A. Vecchiarelli

Tim has approximately 15 years of experience providing auditing, accounting and advisory services to a broad array of public and private financial institutions, specializing in the area of mortgage banking. His experience also includes serving financial institutions within the retail and commercial banking, property and casualty and health care insurance, and asset management sectors.

Tim has advised clients in initial public offerings, public and private debt issuances, merger & acquisition activities, and process and control issues. He is also a firm consultation resource in matters related to auditing mortgage banking entities in accordance with the HUD Audit Guide.

Tim has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Scranton and is a member of the AICPA, the PICPA, and the Philadelphia Chapter of the Financial Managers Society. Tim also serves on the Board of Directors of The Center for Autism, a nonprofit mental health clinic with a unique philosophy and approach to autism treatment. Tim is also an alumnus of Leadership Philadelphia, a leadership development program aimed at preparing business leaders for service on not-for-profit boards in the Philadelphia region.
